The next stop of the trip was Legaspi, home of Mayon Volcano, known for its perfect cone shape. We found Mayon ATV Adventure, a newly opened ATV operator and decided to try our luck with them. John Morales, the manager, was very helpful and gave us an overview of each of the trails. After much group deliberation, we decided on the complete trail.
It was one of the best experiences that I have had off-roading. For the full package of Php 1,850, we were provided a lengthy excursion of over three hours with two guides accompanying our group at all times. The company also provided dry bags to keep your valuables safe, which was a nice bonus. The first part was towards the base of the mountain and quite a technical run. There were alot of instances that each of us got stuck and had to be assisted, which got quite frustrating. The area also seemed to be used as a quarry and had a few dump trucks and cranes that definitely took away from the view and experience as a whole. On the way heading back to where we started and a bit disappointed from constantly drudging the ATV out of obstacles, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was still another run through a stream and towards the beach.
The second half was infinitely better and there were no problems following the trail. One of the guides would also take your camera to help document the experience. Driving through the water was a total rush and the idyllic background made it feel like a scene out of a movie! The final destination was a beach filled with soft, black sand – a welcome end to hours of driving in the sweltering heat, where you could go for a dip and cool down.
If you are looking to save a few, you could certainly do without the technical part and skip straight to the river run. The drive is also overly rocky and I would only recommend it to those that are physically active. A good time to do it would also be in the morning as we did it early afternoon and the full force of the sun could be felt. All in all the excursion was an amazing time and one to checkout if you are ever in the area.
